How To Play Mines
Mines is a simple pick-and-cashout game: you’re shown a grid of hidden tiles, and some of those tiles contain bombs (mines). Your goal is to click safe tiles to increase your payout multiplier, but if you hit a mine, the round ends and you lose your bet.
Before each round, you typically choose a few settings that are completely in your control:
- Bet size: How much you’re risking on the round.
- Number of mines: How many bombs are hidden on the grid.
- Grid size (sometimes): Most casinos use a 5×5 grid (25 tiles), but some offer other layouts.
Once you start the round, the mines are placed randomly on the board. The key decision is how many mines you choose: fewer mines means a higher chance each click is safe, but the payout grows more slowly. More mines means your payouts can jump quickly, but the risk of hitting a bomb rises fast too.
After every safe click, you’ll have two options:
- Accept the casino’s cash-out offer
- Click again for a chance at a better cash-out offer
That cash-out choice is the whole game. You can cash out after a single safe tile, or keep clicking for a bigger payout. The tradeoff is that every extra click increases your chance of eventually hitting a mine.
The House Edge
Mines looks “fair” on the surface because it’s based on random bomb placement, but casinos still make money through the house edge.
Here’s the simplest way to understand it:
- In a perfectly fair Mines game, the cashout multiplier would match the true probability of surviving your clicks.
- In a real casino version, the cashout is usually slightly worse than “fair.” That tiny difference is the house edge.
Every crypto casino will disclose exactly how unfair their payouts are through the Return-To-Player (RTP) of the game:
- 99% RTP = 1% house edge
- 98% RTP = 2% house edge
- 97.5% RTP = 2.5% house edge
That’s why RTP matters when comparing Mines casinos. Two sites can have the “same” Mines game, but the one with higher RTP always gives you slightly better cash-out offers, and hence, better long-run value.
What “Provably Fair” Guarantees
Provably Fair is one of the best features at crypto casinos, but it’s important to understand what it does and doesn’t do.
Provably Fair doesn’t increase your chances of winning. The house edge still exists, and your odds are still determined by things like the grid size, the number of mines you selected, and how many clicks you try before cashing out.
What Provably Fair does guarantee is fairness in the randomness and the casino’s ability to cheat.
In a Provably Fair Mines game, the casino will:
- Commit to the outcome before you play (i.e., it “locks in” where the mines will be placed before you start clicking).
- Reveal enough information after the round for you to verify the result yourself.
This matters because without Provably Fair verification, a shady casino could theoretically do something like “change” mine placements after seeing you place a large wager. With Provably Fair, you can rest assured that the casino didn’t swap anything after seeing your bet.
Mines Tips & Strategies
Make no mistake: there’s no strategy that “beats” Mines in the long run. If the game has a house edge, the casino maintains an advantage no matter what pattern you click or what system you follow.
That said, you can choose playstyles that fit your risk tolerance, and you can use smarter bankroll habits to avoid going broke quickly. Here are a few common approaches players use:
Low-Risk Grinding
- Choose 1–3 mines and cash out after 1–3 safe clicks.
- This gives you a higher hit rate, but smaller payouts.
High-Volatility Sniping
- Choose 8–10+ mines and aim for 1–2 safe clicks, then cash out.
- You’ll get big multipliers quickly if you hit, but you’ll also bust more often.
Trying to “Clear The Board”
- Choose 1 mine, and ignore all cash-out offers until you’ve hit the max win.
- The odds per click are strong, especially early on, but the probability compounds against you the longer you keep going.
Regardless of what strategy suits your style of play, remember to:
- Set a cash-out goal before you start clicking.
- Treat streaks as normal variance (each round is independent).
- Pick casinos with higher RTP.
Try Our Free Mines Calculator
If you want to understand Mines on a deeper level (and play with less guesswork), be sure to try our in-house, free-to-use Mines Calculator.
It’s designed to do two things: help you practice Mines risk-free, and give you real probability + value insights while you play.
Here’s what it can do:
- Simulate Mines for free so you can test different mine counts and cash-out styles without risking money.
- Choose the house edge you want to simulate:
- 1%, 2%, or 2.5% house edge (common real casino settings)
- Or even 0% house edge to see what “perfectly fair” payouts would look like in theory
- Track your profit/loss so you can see how a strategy performs over time.
- Show useful live stats as you play, like:
- Chance of hitting a bomb on the next click
- Chance of clearing the board
- Expected Value (EV) of clicking again
- Your current cash-out vs a mathematically fair cash-out
- And more!
If you’re serious about giving Mines a shot, our calculator makes it way easier to see what’s actually going on under the hood.
FAQ
For example, a Provably Fair system in Mines prevents the casino from doing something shady like:
1) Seeing you place a huge bet
2) Then secretly moving bombs to ensure you lose
In the short run, both long winning streaks and losing streaks are possible, of course.
Low mines = higher hit rate, smaller wins, smoother sessions
High mines = lower hit rate, bigger multipliers, wilder swings
