Roulette Overview

Roulette is a classic casino game where the excitement comes from the variety of betting options, from wagering on a specific number to choosing broader categories like odd/even or red/black. Roulette offers a mix of strategy and chance, making it one of the most beloved games worldwide. Be sure to check our our very own Ultimate Roulette Simulator & Calculator to truly understand your chances of winning, both in the short and long term!

How To Play Roulette

In roulette, you are betting on where the ball will land on a rotating wheel. Let’s go over some of the most popular bets you can make, along with their respective payouts:

Red / Black 1:1 payout
Odd / Even 1:1 payout
1 to 18 / 19 to 36 1:1 payout
1st 12 / 2nd 12 / 3rd 12 2:1 payout
Column Bet 2:1 payout
Corner Bet 8:1 payout
Street Bet 11:1 payout
Split Bet 17:1 payout
Straight Up Bet (Single Number) 35:1 payout

You can typically wager on any one of these bets or some combination of all of them! There are 36 numbered pockets (18 red, 18 black) and either one, two, or three zeroes (colored in green), depending on the variant you are playing.

House Edge

The house edge in this game comes those pesky zeroes. For example, if you place a bet on Red, and the ball lands on a zero, you lose your bet, not push. In other words, each time you place an even money bet (such as Red, Black, Odd, or Even), you are slightly more likely to lose than win, even though it should be 50-50.

When it comes to betting a number straight up, that 35:1 payout might seem rather high and tempting, but the reality is that it’s actually not high enough! In European roulette, the ball has a 1/37 chance of landing in any particular pocket, and so if the casinos were actually fair (hard to imagine, I know!), they’d give you a payout of 36:1, not 35:1.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Roulette Casino

When deciding where to play roulette, there are several key factors to keep in mind:

  • Roulette Variants: There are different types of roulette, such as European, American, and Triple Zero Roulette. The primary difference between them is the number of zeroes on the wheel, which affects the probability of winning and house edge.
  • Bonuses: Some online casinos offer roulette-specific bonuses like deposit matches or free spins that can enhance your gameplay.
  • Live Dealer Options: If you’re looking for a more authentic experience, you can play live-dealer roulette in many online casinos where you can interact with a real dealer in real time.

Pros & Cons of Playing Roulette Online

Pros
  • Pros

Convenience: Play anytime from the comfort of your home

  • Pros

Variety: Access to many roulette variants

  • Pros

Speed: Playing online allows you to place more bets in less time.

Cons
  • Cons

Lack of Social Interaction: The online environment lacks the lively atmosphere of a physical casino.

European Roulette: The most popular version, with a single zero (0), offering better odds for players.

American Roulette: Includes an extra double zero (00), which increases the house edge.

Triple Zero Roulette: As the name suggests, there are three zeroes on this roulette wheel: 0, 00, and 000.

French Roulette: Features unique rules like “La Partage” and “En Prison,” which can reduce the house edge when the ball lands on zero.

Lightning Roulette: This variant allows for payouts as high as 500x on randomly selected “lightning numbers”. The catch is that the non-lightning numbers only pay 29-to-1 instead of 35-to-1 like in normal roulette.

Optimal Game Rules for Roulette

Roulette is largely a game of chance, but selecting the correct variant is important to reduce the house edge. Ideally, you’ll want to play a game where there is only one zero on the wheel (European roulette). The house edge for European roulette is 2.70%. On the other hand, the house edge for American Roulette (2 zeroes) and Triple Zero Roulette (3 zeroes) is 5.26% and 7.69%, respectively. The fewer the number of zeroes, the better.

Additionally, if you’re looking for the chance of a big payout, Lightning Roulette could be a good option, with a house edge of around 2.90%.

Roulette Betting Strategies

Roulette gives you the chance to try out some different betting strategies. Here are a few popular betting systems:

Martingale Strategy: This involves doubling your bet after each loss, so when you eventually win, you recover all previous losses and make a small profit. This strategy works in a perfect world, but you’d need an infinite bankroll and no table limits to guarantee long-term success.

Reverse Martingale: With this strategy, you double your bet after each win rather than after a loss, taking advantage of winning streaks while minimizing losses.

Fibonacci Strategy: This strategy involves increasing your bets according to the famous Fibonacci number sequence (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, …).

Roulette Tips

Although no strategy can guarantee consistent wins, these tips can help you have a more enjoyable and potentially successful roulette experience:

Play European Roulette: The lower house edge makes these variants more favorable to players.

Watch the Table Limits: Make sure you’re aware of the table limits, especially if you plan to use a progressive betting strategy like Martingale or Fibonacci.

Avoid the Gambler’s Fallacy: Just because the ball has landed on red eight times in a row doesn’t mean black is “due”. It also doesn’t mean red is “hot.” Each spin is independent of the previous one.

Our Ranking Methodology

To ensure the best possible experience at an online roulette casino, we thoroughly evaluate each site based on the following criteria:

Roulette Variants Available: The casino should offer a range of roulette games, including European, French, and American versions.

Bonuses for Roulette: We look for casinos that provide roulette-specific bonuses and promotions.

Live Dealer Options: For an immersive experience, we prioritize casinos that offer live dealer roulette.

Mobile Experience: A smooth, optimized mobile interface is key for players who want to enjoy roulette on the go.
