An Ultimate Tour of Canadian Casinos
The casino landscape of the word is a widely diverse one but Canada is a world unto itself in this regard. Owing no doubt to its proud cultural diversity, Canada’s casinoscape (if we may coin the term) is a kaleidoscope of choice, ranging from intimate to sprawling, catering to both locals and tourists, and featuring, in some cases, a certain culturally-unique panache thanks to their Indigenous ownership. So without further ado, we present our Ultimate Tour of Canadian Casinos.
Club Regent Casino
Located in Manitoba, Club Regent Casino sits on lands referred to as Treaties One through Five, having belonged to the Cree, Anishinaabe, Dakota, Lakota, Dene, and Oji-Cree peoples. Club Regent houses 1,200 slot machines, two main zones for gaming, and features “tour and experience” packages that include a “stay and play” at Canad Inns Destination Centre Club Regent Casino Hotel and themed restaurants. The casino also regularly hosts themed promotions, such as for senior citizens, customer appreciation, and for Canadian national holidays.

Casino New Brunswick
Nestled within the highly forested and mountainous New Brunswick, Casino New Brunswick, a $90-million venture which opened in 2010 and created jobs for almost 1,200 people on its own. The casino comprises three separate buildings, all part of one cohesive design, and features an interior corridor that spotlights visuals of New Brunswick’s 69 lighthouses. While sporting a lighthouse design itself, Casino New Brunswick features an impressive 1,200 slot machines, a hotel with a spa and pool, and the Molson Canadian Centre, which has been the venue destination for notables such as the Eagles, Air Supply, Shawn Desman, and Wheel of Fortune LIVE!

Casino Yellowhead
Right at the eastern edge of both the Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park and Kinokamau Plains in Edmonton, Alberta, Casino Yellowhead is part of the PURE Community, which aims to give back to the province by devoting 85% of their slot revenue and 50% of their table game revenue to fund local charities and community outreach. Pure Casino Yellowhead features a 24-hour poker room, several hundred slot machines, and a showroom for live entertainment which has hosted notable musical acts—including original bands and tribute performances—and live comedy.

Elbow River Casino
Located just northeast of the Tsuu T’ina Nation 145 reserve, Elbow River Casino prides itself on being a slice of Vegas life in downtown Calgary, Alberta. Images of Vegas life are immediately conjured when you make your way inside, where you’ll marvel at the intentional choice of décor, broad selection of gaming options, including table games, slots, poker, and an off-track “racing theater” boasting more races to bet on than any other venue in Calgary. Elbow River features a deli, buffet, and sports bar for your breakfast, lunch, and dinner needs.

River Rock Casino
Directly adjacent to British Columbia’s longest river, the Fraser River, River Rock Casino sports a nature-focused, lodge-type architecture that will be familiar to anyone who likes to enjoy a mountain getaway every now and then. Located only five minutes from Vancouver International Airport, the casino has been host to the film and television industries many times, serving production companies in search of casino filming locales. River Rock features a spa that boasts a full suite of amenities, including facials, miscellaneous body treatments, and massages. The hotel has been known to offer sizable hotel rooms with great views of Richmond, and the city’s famed, multicultural Night Market is only 15 minutes away.

Rideau Carleton Casino
Just south of Ottawa—Canada’s great capital—and north of the St. Lawrence River, the Rideau Carleton Casino is also home to Rideau Carleton Raceway, which originally opened its doors in 1962. The casino and raceway are part of the Hard Rock Ottawa initiative, which supports Indigenous peoples of Canada in an attempt to bolster truth and reconciliation. Rideau Carleton Casino is run by both Hard Rock International and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, the latter of which reinvests 100% of revenue back into the province. Rideau Carleton aims to always have the best new slot machines, and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The world’s best performers are known to frequent the stage, and high-quality fireworks displays on national holidays are always a welcome spectacle.

Casino de Montréal
Sitting right on top of Lake Saint-Louis, Casino de Montréal never ceases to amaze. Established in 1993, it began impressively, featuring 65 game tables and 1,200 slot machines. Just one year later, it began to undergo renovations, all of which have culminated in the spectacular Pavillon de la France, which itself features gorgeous projections on its 14 by 21-metre multimedia wall. Not to be outdone technologically, Casino de Montréal is also home to ARcade by Moment Factory, a “video game projected on the floor” meant to be experienced in groups, and featuring 3 levels of difficulty and 6 different game types.

Casino Rama
You’d be hard-pressed as a casino lover to have not heard of Casino Rama, even outside of Canada. And if you’re a top performer, you’ll no doubt be performing there at some point in your career. Located immediately north of Lake Simcoe and owned by the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, the venue boasts a whopping ten restaurants, 2,500 slot machines, 110 table games, and a 5,000-seater entertainment centre that has played host to Diana Ross, Faith Hill, ZZ Top, Dolly Parton, Smokey Robinson, Alicia Keys, and Lionel Richie.

Casino Woodbine
Woodbine Racetrack—located just five minutes away from Toronto Pearson International Airport—holds a special place in this writer’s heart. Even the slightest mention conjures up warm, fuzzy memories of watching the thoroughbred races with my uncles, who saw themselves there every Sunday, much to the chagrin of their wives. Located in Etobicoke, Ontario, Woodbine’s first racetrack was opened almost 70 years ago and now features three racecourses, a fitting venue for Canada’s oldest thoroughbred horse race, the King’s Plate. Casino Woodbine, running now for a quarter century, is open 24 hours a day and features 3,500 slot machines, 200 electronic table games, and 100 table games, including baccarat, roulette, and blackjack. As I write this, Casino Woodbine is at the tail-end of a massive expansion to provide retail shops, a hotel, and an entertainment venue to its regulars and tourists.

Fallsview Casino
Niagara Falls. At its mention, we all immediately conjure up images of the majestic variety. Niagara Fallsview Resort is nothing less than the best that Canada has to offer. Not only does it have a hotel sitting high above the falls itself, but each of its rooms was also specifically arranged to capitalize on that fact, giving occupants the best possible view of the falls at all times. Its impressive gallery of shops sports such names as Swarovski, Danier, and Roots, and I have personally admitted to being positively addicted to the Noodle Bar’s selection, which features top-quality sushi and sashimi in what amounts to pitch-perfect ambiance to help you wind down from an evening of thrilling gambling. Speaking of ambiance, it is hard to put into words just how Fallsview will make you feel, even as you wander among the aisles of slot machines and hover on the outskirts of game tables. The experience is almost dreamlike, with a constant flow of clean, conditioned air, and interior decoration and lighting that makes you feel as though you were royalty. At Fallsview, you will feel like a high roller, whether you’re rolling high or not. Even if you haven’t spent a dime, you’ll feel richer than you were before you walked in.
